Padron Black: Examining a Limited Expression

on
Padron cigars don’t need an introduction. Family-owned and based in Nicaragua, Padron has built its name over decades on consistency, strength, and flavor. They started back in 1964, and every cigar they make is rolled with aged Nicaraguan tobacco grown by the Padron family themselves. It’s all about quality, and that shows in the final product—whether you’re smoking a core line or a rare limited edition.

The Padron Black is one of those special releases.

What Makes this Cigar Different

This cigar is part of the Padron Black series—a line known for small-batch releases and more experimental flavor profiles. Unlike the 1964 or 1926 series, which have been around for years and are easier to find, the Black series is limited. When they make a new one, it’s usually only available for a short time, and in small numbers.
This cigar comes in two versions: Maduro and Natural. Both are Nicaraguan puros, rolled with well-aged tobacco that’s been selected and blended specifically for this release.

Maduro

The Maduro is bold and full-bodied. The wrapper is dark and oily, and from the first light you get deep, heavy notes—dark chocolate, espresso, and black pepper. It burns slow and stays strong from start to finish. If you’re someone who likes a cigar with weight and presence, this one delivers.

Natural

The Natural version is a different experience. Still rich, but more balanced. You’ll taste cedar, dry hay, roasted nuts, and a soft sweetness that builds as you smoke. It’s medium to full in body, with a smoother feel than the Maduro. If you want something a bit more refined but still with that Padron signature intensity, the Natural hits the mark.
Where It Fits in the Padron Lineup
  • Compared to the Padron 1926 Series: The 1926 line is full-bodied and complex, like the PB97 Maduro, but it’s part of the regular catalog and comes in more sizes.

  • Compared to the Family Reserve: The Family Reserve line is Padron’s most premium, with more classic profiles. The PB97 is a bit bolder, more modern, and a little more adventurous in its blend.

  • Within the Black Series: The Padron Black follows previous limited editions like the Black No. 89 and No. 100. Each one explores a different flavor angle or size, and the PB97 stands out with its depth and clarity—especially in how the flavors shift through the smoke.

Why We Recommend It at Tinderbox

The Padron Black is on our shelves because it represents what we look for in a limited release: quality, consistency, and something different from what you already know. If you’re already a Padron smoker, this cigar gives you something new to explore. If you’re new to the brand, it’s a strong introduction to what they can do at the top tier.

It’s also a great collector’s cigar. The Black series isn’t around forever, and the PB97 is already becoming harder to find. If you’re buying the PB97, make sure you’re storing it right. This isn’t a cigar you want drying out. A solid humidor (65–70% humidity) and a proper hygrometer will make sure it stays in perfect condition until you’re ready to light it up.

If you’re looking for a standout experience backed by real quality and tradition, this one is worth picking up.
